SEBI’s nomination update: what to do before September 2026

From 1 September 2026, new single-holder mutual fund folios need a nomination — or a formal opt-out. Here’s a clear checklist so your family is not left guessing.
Unclaimed mutual fund assets often start with a simple gap: the folio had no clear nomination, or the nominee details were outdated. SEBI’s modified nomination framework (circular dated 29 May 2026) is designed to make nomination easier — and harder to ignore — from 1 September 2026.
This note is education, not legal advice. Always follow the forms and authentication methods your AMC or registrar provides.
What changes from 1 September 2026
- New single-holder demat accounts and mutual fund folios must carry a nomination, or a signed opt-out declaration. Silence is not an opt-out.
- Joint accounts continue to treat nomination as optional.
- You may nominate up to three people and change or cancel nominations any number of times.
- Mandatory details are trimmed: nominee name and relationship (plus date of birth if the nominee is a minor). Contact details and ID particulars are optional but useful.
- Physical wet-signature nominations generally no longer need a witness — unless you use a thumb impression.
- Online nomination can use digital signature, Aadhaar-based e-sign, or OTP-based two-factor authentication as prescribed.
Why this matters for families
Nomination does not replace a will, but it speeds identification of the person the AMC can contact for transmission after an investor’s demise. Without it, legal heirs may face longer paperwork.
If you already hold folios without nomination, expect periodic reminders (email/SMS) and on-login prompts until you update — SEBI has asked platforms to nudge investors.
